DoP – A bit of an intro

August 31, 2008

It’s time for me to do a little talking now about DoP, which, may I just say is a great game, not because it has flashy graphics(which it doesn’t), a strong story(which again, it doesn’t), or even great characters(4 generic classes and nothing in between), but because it’s addictive, and because it’s so cheap. I bought the game for £11.86, now, consider that many games I have played have cost more than that, are played less often, and, in many cases, less fun.
So, let’s break down what is good about, how, and what other developers could stand to learn.

A further word on Ubiquity

August 31, 2008

After my words on ubiquity on Quantum Zoo, I thought it more reasonable to discuss my recent discoveries and notes on ubiquity itself.

  1. After my notes on being unable to disable or delete some built in functions I recently discovered that all of the default functions, with a few exceptions, are stored in a nice .js file called builtincmds.js (for those of you running Linux it can be found under ~/.mozilla/firefox/LatestProfile/extentions/ubiquity@labs.mozilla.com/chrome/content/builtincmds.js I’m assuming Mac and Windows would have some similar path )and can easily be commented out (I’ll find a way to link to my commented version, just in case anyone wants it).
  2. This file can also be commented as much as you like to add extra commands, for those of you that don’t like the idea of turning on your history to add new commands(which is something I don’t really understand, grease monkey doesn’t need history, so why should ubiquity?)
  3. ubiquity really does need a way to understand the whole page, sure, I could press ctrl+A, then launch ubiquity and typet thisbut then, what’s the point of even having ubiquity, when there are plug ins that I could launch to translate the page without needing to type those extra characters or even highlight the whole page. And as for the idea of linking, that’s a really big necessity already.

Again, comments welcome.

Oh, and look out for my first post here on DoP (depths of peril) later on today, Shamus reviewed it a while ago, but I think I shall cover it in more detail, what I really wish to talk most about is customisation.
